Additional Freshman Application Requirements

In addition to submitting a complete application, freshman applicants must submit the following by the appropriate application deadline:

1. Short answer: Inherent in the design disciplines the capacity to impact the world around us. What does the opportunity to develop such capacity mean to you and you approach to your college education? Please limit your response to 250-300 words.
2. Please provide and upload three images total that demonstrate your creativity. Then, describe how the three images are representative of how you see creativity as a way to describe, reflect on or change the world. Please limit your response to 50-75 words. The three images may all be of one option type or varied amongst the two following options:
   • Option 1 – Either an original photograph or photographs from a camera, smart phone/mobile device.
   • Option 2 – Images of an original art or design project that you have produced and authored yourself.

Additional Transfer Application Requirements

Transfer applications and portfolios are accepted only from students of architecture and interior design programs at other universities whose minimum transfer GPA is 3.25. The required portfolio will be evaluated with emphasis given to excellence in design, academic preparation, essays and other achievements. Course credit and placement in studio sequence is determined upon acceptance.

In addition to submitting a complete application, transfer applicants must submit the following by the appropriate application deadline:

1. Submit an essay addressing Topic D. Essays & Short Answers
2. Submit two letters of recommendation.

McCombs School of Business

The McCombs School of Business offers freshman admission only for the summer or fall semesters. Transfer admission is only offered for the fall semester. Applicants should apply as an “undeclared” major (Unspecified Business). Only after enrolling do business students pick a specific undergraduate major.

Additional Transfer Application Requirements

In addition to submitting a complete application, transfer applicants must submit proof of credit or in-progress work for the following business indicator courses by the appropriate deadline:

• Calculus I: MATH 408K/308K, 408C or 403K/303K
• Calculus II: MATH 408L/308L, 408D or 303L
• Microeconomics: ECON 304K
• Macroeconomics: ECON 304L

MATH 408/308M is not a required course, but is recommended for Science and Technology Management.

Honors Programs

Canfield Business Honors

Modeled after case-based MBA programs, the Canfield Business Honors Program’s small classes focus on discussion and presentation, group collaboration and analytic exercises—all in the interest of challenging business students to think outside the box. This honors program is also available for transfer students. Both freshman and transfer applicants may apply to this program.

Texas Honors Computer Science and Business (Texas CSB)

Texas CSB is a new integrated honors degree program between Canfield Business Honors and the Department of Computer Science. Students enjoy a small cohort of business and tech savvy peers, opportunities at top companies that combine business and technology, and challenging curriculum that provides a solid foundation in business and computer science concepts. Freshman applicants may apply to this program.

Texas Honors Electrical and Computer Engineering and Business (ECB)

Texas ECB is a dual degree program that provides hands-on, project-based learning within two of the most in-demand fields in today’s marketplace. Students receive a solid understanding of both business and electrical and computer engineering (ECE), while also earning bachelor’s degrees in ECE honors and business honors more quickly than studying each discipline independently. Freshman applicants may apply to this program.

School of Civic Leadership

The School of Civil Leadership offers admission only for the fall semester.

Additional Freshman and Transfer Requirements

In addition to submitting a complete application, freshman applicants must submit the following two short answer prompts if applying to the School of Civic Leadership:

• What would you do if you didn’t go to college?
• The inscription on the entrance of Old Main reads, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” What relevance, if any, does this quote have for life in a university or for service in a civic community?

Each response should be 200 words maximum.

Moody College of Communication

The Moody College of Communication offers admission only for the fall semester.

  • If you wish, you may submit either a video/short film or a written review/critique to support your application. This may be something you did for school or on your own. This is an opp ortunity to demonstrate your creative and artistic voice and show us your potential as an RTF student. The duration of the video should be no more than 5 minutes OR the review/critique should be no more than 500 words. Either item will be submitted within MyStatus after you have submitted your
    application.

  Honors Program

  Students in the Moody College Honors Program experience a diverse intellectual community that cultivates critical thinking, dialogue and transformative leaders in all areas of communication. The program offers an interdisciplinary 15-credit curriculum, special events and service activities, and eligibility for honors housing and scholarships to complement any communication major.

    Special Programs

    Athletic Training

    Both freshman and transfer applicants must be admitted to The University of Texas at Austin before applying to the Athletic Training program, preferably as an Applied Movement Science or Exercise Science major in Kinesiology and Health Education. After completing the required prerequisites, students can apply to the Athletic Training program.

    Sport Management

    Both freshman and transfer applicants should apply as a Physical Culture and Sports major. After completing the required prerequisites, students can apply to the Sport Management program.

    Teacher Certification Sequence (Transfer Applicants)

    Transfer applicants interested in a teacher certification professional development sequence must complete a separate application from their transfer application.

    Cockrell School of Engineering

    The Cockrell School of Engineering offers freshman admission only for the summer or fall semesters. Transfer admission is only offered for the fall.

    Make sure to have your SAT, ACT, AP or IB scores sent to UT Austin if you’re planning to use your test scores as proof of calculus readiness. If you are using earned college credit, we need your official college transcript showing the credit.

    Additional Transfer Application Requirements

    Transfer applicants must submit proof of credit or in-progress work for a minimum of four technical courses—math, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, computer science or engineering—including:

    • MATH 408K, 408L or 408M
    • PHYS 303K and 103M

    To be most competitive, applications should undertake additional technical coursework.

    Honors Programs

    School Honors Program:

    Engineering Honors Program participants benefit from access to honors housing, merit scholarships and community-building activities, such as an annual welcome event and an honors First-Year Interest Group (FIG). Freshman applicants may apply to this program.

    Departmental Honors Programs:

    • The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Honors Program is an honors program for outstanding and highly motivated ECE undergraduate students. The ECE Honors Program provides a rigorous, challenging and faster-pace curriculum and environment to a cohort of students who have the background, ability and the desire and motivation to pursue a more demanding track. Freshman applicants may apply to this program.
    • Texas Honors Electrical and Computer Engineering and Business (ECB) is a dual degree program that provides hands-on, project-based learning within two of the most in- demand fields in today’s marketplace.         Special Programs

        Humanities

        Freshman students who wish to major in Humanities should choose the Undeclared major option. They can then apply to Humanities. The process involves designing a course of study, documenting interests and meeting with an advisor.

        Transfer applicants interested in Humanities have the option of listing Humanities as their first choice major within their application.

        Honors Programs

        Liberal Arts Honors Program

        The Liberal Arts Honors Program focuses on broadening students’ worldview and preparing them to lead. It is ideal for students who want the depth of a particular Liberal Arts discipline with the flexibility to incorporate specialized classes focused on reasoning, research and writing. Freshman applicants may apply to this program.

        Plan II Honors Program

        Plan II offers a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum in the arts and sciences and the flexibility to incorporate other majors and degrees. At its heart is the study of literature, philosophy, society and natural sciences—the things that make us human, from poetry to the latest discoveries in physics or cosmology. Freshman applicants may apply to this program.

        College of Natural Sciences

        The College of Natural Sciences offers freshman and transfer admission to all entry terms except Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Undeclared. Environmental Science is only available for fall admission, while Computer Science is only available for transfer admission in the fall. Only freshmen may be admitted as Undeclared. All students are admitted with entry-level status in their chosen major. Students will decide which degree pathway to follow after completing entry-level coursework.

             The College of Natural Sciences’ honors programs offer a range of opportunities for laboratory and field research placements, interdisciplinary study and personalized academic support. Both freshman and transfer students may apply for these programs.

             College honors programs include:

             • Texas Honors Computer Science and Business (Texas CSB)

             Departmental honors programs include:

             • Turing Scholars (Computer Science)
             • Human Ecology Honors (Advanced Human Development and Family Sciences or Advanced Nutritional Sciences)*

             *This honors program is also available for transfer students.

             School of Nursing

             The School of Nursing offers admission only for the fall semester. If you’re applying for transfer admission, select Nursing as your first choice.

             Additional Freshman Application Requirements

             In addition to submitting a complete application, freshman applicants must submit the following short answer prompt if applying to Nursing as their first choice major:

             • Discuss the factors that have influenced your motivation and deep desire to pursue a career in Nursing. Please include any activities and/or life experiences that are related.

                College of Pharmacy

                The College of Pharmacy program requirements include at least two years of undergraduate pre-pharmacy prerequisites and core/flag course requirements.

                Special Program

                Freshman

                Admission to the College of Pharmacy is a two-step process. First, you must be admitted to and enroll in a related major, such as those found in the College of Natural Sciences. After completing initial studies in your selected major in your pre-pharmacy college, you will be able to apply to a professional program in the College of Pharmacy.

                Transfer

                Students applying for admission to the PharmD program after beginning their undergraduate coursework at another college or university do not need to complete the admissions application or apply for undergraduate transfer admission. Instead, visit the College of Pharmacy’s website for application instructions.

                Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs

                The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs offers admission to fall freshman applicants only.

                Steve Hicks School of Social Work

                The Steve Hicks School of Social Work offers freshman admission for all entry terms; summer, fall and spring.

                Special Program

                Students admitted to the Steve Hicks School of Social Work enter as Pre-Social Work majors. After completing prerequisite courses, they are eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work program.

                Pre-Med, Pre-Law & Teaching

                Our students don’t major in pre-med or pre-law. Instead, those interested in attending a professional school after earning their bachelor’s degree receive specialized advising through Pre-Law Services or the Health Professions Office.

                Longhorns planning to teach middle or high school don’t major in education. Instead, they pursue a bachelor’s degree in their field with a teaching certification through UTeach.
